Carriers are not carriers

#1
I know everything will be re-balanced in the future but one thing is bothering me. Carriers feel more like battleships or dreadnaughts than carriers.

Let me start off by saying the Freya is one of my favorite ships because I can launch a wing of fighters while cloaked and watch them do damage to my enemies. This is what a carrier is supposed to be, a base for fighters to resupply and sortie from.

Carriers as they are, function closer to battleships or dreadnaughts. Battle-carriers such as in the game have been tested but not have been put into production because they fall short of carrier and battleship use. Battle-Carriers (IE Battlestars and Stargate X-303, BC-303, BC-304 lines) are works of fiction, but they do look good on the screen (but fall short in reality). Launching their wings of fighters and having the capability to destroy enemy capital ships, do look good but there are inherit flaws in the design, namely space. Fighters need space to takeoff, land, and maintain fighters while battleships need space for support equipment for weapons. Two space hungry requirements do not work well together.

The main combat capabilities of carriers are the fighter wings. I strongly believe that the stand alone offense capabilities of the carriers should be reduced but their support abilities (troop capacity, Radar range, fighter wing support) should be strengthened. In short Fighter wings should get a good boost when used by carriers because fighters should be the primary means of offense and the weapons of a carrier should be for last resort defense only.

I like the idea of carriers but as they are in the game, carriers feel like battleships and/or dreadnaughts with fighters.

What would you think about a carrier with cloak and 6 wings of fighters BUT weak shields and no guns or only one gun?

I have played a game with such a craft in it. Hard to set up but fun to play once you got the hang of it.
Carriers are along the lines of tactical combat compared to the more brute force combat of a dreadnaught. As it is currently a Carrier is an end game (if not the end game) ship.

The proper way to play a carrier is to stay out of the firing range of your opponent and hit them with fighters. If the carrier gets in firing range of the opponent then the carrier did something wrong.

I think a true carrier will play a lot better when we can run in a fleet.

The Freya feels the closest to a real carrier right now imo, just needs the extra squadron. For me, the perfect carrier would have minimal weapons, move slow but have either cloak or strong shields and hull. The state of squadrons right now makes that impractical, the Boson Bomber, strongest in the game, barely dents anything above Cruiser class. I think once balancing comes more to the fore, we'll see alot of carrier changes made, especially once fleet mechanics come in to play.

Carriers are not supposed to be weak and defenseless. Think of the Tiger's Claw from the old Wing Commander games. Or Battlestar Galactica from the show. Carriers act more like capital ships, they have fighters yes, but often they also have very heavy armor or shields and plenty of Big Guns. Their downside is they are hella expensive to outfit and purchase, are usually somewhat slow and lumbering, and have problems with dodging incoming enemy fire instead going for a 'take it on the chin' approach.

I do often forget we are mimicking the tropes of sci-fi (I think too literal where naval carriers need support). In the sense of a carrier in sci-fi as this game is (herp on my part) then yeah, carriers are generally flagship type material, super expensive, armed to the teeth, tanky as hell with the trade off of not being able to move. Hence why they need the squadrons and other ships to support them, they are strong, but a sitting duck. I should make another mod of the Damanhour to reflect this, the Flagship Damanhour. I can't add more than 3 wings, but I can give it everything else. Also give it the weak points of these ships like turret blind spots and such. Should be another fun project if I'm not beaten to it hehe

Well, the carrier in this game is more like a Battlestar than a true carrier (huge BSG fan here. Still hope someone gonna make a BSG mod someday Blush).

Maybe in a future update, the current carriers should be reclassified as Battlecruiser(still top tier thou), and add a new "true" carrier class between battleship and dreadnoughts tier that mostly only have 1 to 2 weapons on each side with no heavy weapons, but has at least 5 wings of fighters. Or something like taht.

It's like you're reading our wishlist...did it leak somewhere? Smile . For later updates there are initial plans to add some more ships and resizes...
