Hard Core game play style

#11
I'm going to vote this up.
I was thinking about this last night and so I'm going to try a little experiment.
I'm going to RP as a pirate. I've been flying the Jupiter because it has that pirate look. Brownish/red color, big green Malon theta-radiation engines...
I got to thinking... Pirates generally use smaller faster ships with a lot of fire-power such as frigates or brigantines so....
I going to drop a class and pick up a Nibiru. Same color and engine as the Jupiter, but smaller and I love the looks of it. It looks like a pirate ship Big Grin
I'm going to hone my grappling and boarding techniques. They both scream pirating. Grappling. I've never seen this in a space sim. Cool idea and kudos to whoever came up with it.
So tonight my play style will be hiding in asteroid belts with a full crew of crack commandos ready for boarding and the grappler on standby waiting for some poor, unwary freighter to come along. All evidence will be destroyed after looting Big Grin
Anyway. Point being. If I get shot down then that will end this pirates career and I will start all over again. No save file will be kept for this character Big Grin
Edit: No save file will be used after death. I will have a save file if he last more than one play session...

Yes, I have a similar game RingingEars. I allow saving for each days play. But if I die, saves are wiped, and I am quite enjoying it. Makes me be more cautious when taking on attack missions etc.

Well Tanvaras it lasted for about an hour before I went down in flames lol Big Grin
For some reason I was having an identity crisis... I kept bouncing between pirate and merc.
I would see blue/green fighting red and figured I would step in, shoot red, and reap the loot. What? That's not what pirates do. Pirates are sneaky, underhanded, scoundrels...
So I started a new game. Now if I saw blue/green fighting red I just sat back and watched. After the fight I would fly in and take the "collectables", regardless of who won or lost, and be on my way Wink
Regardless to say some blue/green are now red since [insert faction here] decided it was a good idea to send a freighter out alone without any escorts Rolleyes
On the upside I'm getting to be a master at grappling and boarding... and looting Big Grin

if this would be an extra option then yea i would like to see it in as im not a massive fan of hard core modes like this but as an extra option i would defiantly give it a serious go! would also encourage some competition within the community

I think someone's mentioned sth like this before, but I'd like to have a permadeath mod, but with one little suggestion in that case, if your ship is destroyed, it'd be nice to have let's say 50% chance for your quick evacuation to an escape pod, a small vessel, no arms, relatively fast travelling so you cna give it a go and run make a run for a friendly planet and save your hide. As I said, think someone's mentioned a similar thing, so I'm kinda bumping it again. Just imagine the feeling of evading, running like crazy, with only one chance of survival, enemies firing at ya, you go for the asteroid field to hide, and trying to survive.. Imagine the epicness of you eventually succeeding to evac Big Grin

too extreme for a game. but more immersion and realism is welcomed!

The idea of the restart of the game after the player has been killed once is quit interesting as this will create a fight for survival.
For incredible games look at this site.

Does anyone enjoy playing a hardcore style of play? (As in Dead is dead - no reload of save once dead)

I am considering giving that a go. Allowed to save for sleep etc, but if killed start new game. I am keen to see how far I can get before I get vented into space.

Does this style of play appeal to others? I am a bit of a masochist in games at times LOL.

Cheers

Tanvaras - Pirate of the Outer Systems!

Yeah... I enjoy that kind of thing after I've mastered a game and know what's what, but I always leave my self an "out" by not counting deaths caused by game bugs or computer malfunctions (the batteries in my mouse going dead and getting me geeked when I'm playing hard core don't mean I need to start over, but getting vented by pirates yeah.)

I used to have a competition with friends back in the day with S.T.A.L.K.E.R and later on the X3 series of "how many times have you died by the time you beat the game?" (Or in X by the time you have earned 2-3 m1 class dreadnoughts,.) The winner would be the one with the least amounts of deaths and buy the majority of the beer'n snacks at our next LAN party.

What I hate is those games that force hard core mode no matter what (I'm looking at *you* Swords of the Stars The Pit) cause then I have to back up the saves manually so non gaming stuff like getting a phone call, or the dog blowing chunks under the computer desk don't cost me 20 hours of play time.

har....hard....hardcore mode!!!! Ohhh hell yes, Where do I sign the life waiver gimmi gimmi gimmi!.

If your looking for a bit of inspiration to play hardcore check out the song - Iron Man Mode, by Dan Bull.

I have been known on occasion to set read only permission on save game directories to force myself to go hardcore.

Kind Regards,
Phlintlock.
Plan B is the same as plan A but with the element of panic.
